Screens quietly rewrite how things appear. This project responds to three readings: What Is Code? (Paul Ford, 2015), Post-Identity Design: Brands, Politics, and Technological Instability (Federico Pérez Villoro & Christopher Hamamoto, 2017), and What Screens Want (Frank Chimero, 2013). Together, they explore how code, interfaces, and screens shape and reframe identity.
Building on design ideas from my earlier Manuscript project, the site makes visible the hidden structures that guide our digital experiences. It shows the mechanics behind what we see and how we present ourselves online. Elements usually tucked away in the background become intentional design choices. By echoing and exaggerating browser windows and interface elements, the visual language reveals how screens frame what we see and turns that framing into the subject itself.
Designed and developed in HTML and CSS by Lucy Trepanier. The project draws on ideas from What Is Code? (Paul Ford, 2015), Post-Identity Design: Brands, Politics, and Technological Instability (Federico Pérez Villoro & Christopher Hamamoto, 2017), and What Screens Want (Frank Chimero, 2013). Typography includes Helvetica Neue and Archivo Black. Supplemental artwork by Bárbara Abbês, originally published in Eye on Design. Last updated December 2025.
